Cabling and Bracing / Hazardous Tree Remediation
Not every tree is perfect. Branches or whole trees may become hazardous, whether the cause is genetic or the result of neglect and/or abuse in the past. When hazards exist, it is often possible to reduce the risks through the installation of supportive cables and/or braces, allowing otherwise dangerous trees to be appreciated enjoyed for many more years.
Reasons for Cabling and Bracing:
- Large, co-dominant or multiple stems that increase potential for failure and splitting of the tree
- Failure of opposing limbs that leads to an imbalance in tree's crown/canopy
- Support of large, heavy limbs to two or more other limbs
- To limit the movement of specified limbs
- Tight, vee-shaped crotches that are weakly attached because of included bark
Some things to consider:
- Hazardous trees cannot be made safe by the use of cables or braces, thus the situation must be carefully assessed when deciding to install supplemental support systems.
- Any time hardware is installed in a tree; there will be wounding and the risk of decay.
- If a system is installed provisions should be made for future inspections and maintenance.
- Before installing cables or braces, the tree should be properly pruned to remove hazardous limbs and to reduce the weight of the limbs requiring support.
